Requirements for Naturalization and the Citizenship Examination
Permanent residents of the United States can choose to become citizens through a process called "naturalization". This has a number of benefits, including:
Freedom from deportation.
Voting rights.
The ability to assist other family members in gaining permanent residence.
You must generally meet the following requirements to become a naturalized citizen:
1. You must be over 18 years of age.
2. You must be a permanent resident of the United States for at least five years before applying
for naturalization.
3. You must physically remain within the United States for at least half of these five years.
4. You must reside within the United States from the time of your application for naturalization until admission to citizenship.
5. You must reside within the state where your application for naturalization was filed for at least three months.
6. You must demonstrate the ability to understand, speak, and read elementary English.
7. You must understand the fundamentals of American history and government.
8. You must be of good moral character while residing in the United States.
9. You must show loyalty to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
10. You must not be barred from naturalization due to membership in certain political organizations or for advocacy of certain political positions.
11. You must be able to actively take the oath of citizenship.
After filing for naturalization, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) will schedule an examination.
You must be able to sign your name in English. You will also be tested on your English reading and writing skills. You will not be required to take the literacy examination if you are:
" Over 50 years old and have been a permanent legal resident for over 20 years.
" Over 55 years old and have been a permanent legal resident for over 15 years.
" Not physically able to read or write.
You will also be asked questions about American history and government.
